The Public Security Police, designated by PSP, is a uniformed and armed security force, with a public service nature and administrative autonomy.
PSP's mission is to ensure democratic legality, guarantee internal security and the rights of citizens, in accordance with the Constitution and the Law. The PSP's generic mission is enshrined in the Constitution and in its Organization and Functioning Law, which clearly shows that police action is carried out in the context of internal security and citizens rights are both a boundary and purpose of its action.
The Lisbon Metropolitan Command is divided in 3 major fields of action - Operational, Support and Police Divisions. Also, depending directly from the Lisbon Police Commander are the Public Information Office, Ethics and Discipline Branch and the Commander Support Office.
With a geographic area of 656 km², it has over 1 750 000 inhabitants, thus this in order to coordinate our security actions, it is divided in 11 Generic Police Divisions and 5 Specific Divisions - Airport Security Division, Public Transportations Security Division, Criminal Investigation Division, Road Traffic Division and Facilities Security Division.
The Generic Police Divisions are subdivided in Integrated or Non Integrated, being the first ones in the Lisbon Municipality area and the second ones in the surrounding municipalities of Lisbon Metropolitan Area.
